What Makes a Sweet Vegan?

A sweet is vegan if it contains no animal-derived ingredients at all. Sounds simple, but traditional sweets are full of things that rule them out. The biggest culprits are gelatine (made from animal bones and connective tissue), beeswax (used as a glazing agent), carmine (a red colouring made from insects), and certain milk derivatives.

Vegan sweets swap these out for plant-based alternatives. Gelatine gets replaced with pectin or starch. Beeswax is swapped for carnauba wax, which comes from palm leaves. Colours come from fruit and vegetable concentrates. The result is a sweet that tastes just as good, made without animal products.
