Sour Sweets: The UK’s Best Selection from £1

What Makes Sour Sweets Sour?

The acids behind the tang

Most sour sweets get their kick from food acids, mainly citric acid, malic acid and tartaric acid. Citric acid is the most common and gives that clean, sharp lemon-style sourness. Malic acid, found naturally in apples, tends to produce a deeper, more lingering tang. Tartaric acid is less common but hits hard and fast.

The sourness usually comes in two waves. The outer coating, often a sugar and acid mix, delivers the initial hit. Then the sweet itself, whether it’s a gummy, a chew bar or a fizzy belt, carries the secondary flavour. The stronger the acid concentration in that coating, the more your mouth reacts.

Why some sour sweets are more intense than others

Not all sour sweets are made equal. The intensity depends on the concentration and combination of acids used, and how quickly they dissolve on your tongue. Extreme sour sweets typically use a higher ratio of malic acid, which activates saliva production faster and gives that puckering sensation people either love or find genuinely hard to handle.

Types of Sour Sweets in This Range

Fizzy belts and strips

Fizzy belts are one of the most popular sour sweets in the UK. They’re chewy, brightly coloured and coated in a sugar and citric acid mix that gives them their fizzy finish. Flavours typically include strawberry, apple, blue raspberry and watermelon. They work brilliantly in pick and mix or bulk bags for sharing.

Sour gummies and worms

Gummy sour sweets hold their sourness differently to belts. The acid is usually mixed into the gummy itself rather than just the coating, which means the flavour lasts longer as you chew. Sour worms, sour bears and tangy rings are all popular choices here. Many are also vegan-friendly and halal-certified, making them a good option for mixed groups.

Extreme sour picks

If the standard range doesn’t cut it, the extreme end of this category is where things get serious. These sweets typically combine multiple acids for a sustained, face-pulling sourness that has made them popular in social media taste tests and challenge videos. Great for anyone who likes to take their sweet eating competitively.

Sour sweets for parties and events
