Walkers Crisps is the United Kingdom’s leading manufacturer of crisp snacks, enjoyed by millions every single day. With a rich heritage stretching back over 70 years and a portfolio of beloved flavours, Walkers has established itself as Britain’s most trusted and best-selling crisp brand.
A Legacy Built on Flavour and Quality
The Walkers story begins with Mr. Henry Walker, a successful butcher from Mansfield, England, who relocated in the 1880s to run a shop in Leicester. Walker started a new sideline when postwar rationing made meat scarce. Under the guidance of managing director R.E. Gerrard, in 1948 the firm began frying potato slices in a fish fryer. This humble beginning marked the start of what would become the UK’s crisp empire.
Walkers launched Cheese and Onion flavour in 1954 and Salt and Vinegar in 1967, two decisions that shaped the brand’s identity for the next 70 years. These classic flavours became the cornerstone of Walkers’ success and remain among the most popular varieties today. Other classics like Prawn Cocktail, Roast Chicken and Smoky Bacon came later, around the 1970s.
Growth and Global Recognition
By the time PepsiCo acquired Walkers in 1989, it was the second largest crisp brand in the UK behind Golden Wonder. PepsiCo’s backing transformed Walkers. With serious investment in production capacity and marketing (Gary Lineker became the face of the brand in 1995 and has stayed there ever since), Walkers overtook Golden Wonder by the mid-1990s and has not been seriously challenged since.
Other key brands of the company include Quavers, Monster Munch, Dippas, and Sensations. Even more exciting developments were around the bend in the form of the new Sensations sub-brand launched in May 2002. These chips featured exotic-sounding flavors such as Thai Lemongrass.
World-Leading Production
The Walkers production site in Leicester is the biggest crisp factory in the world. Over 11 million bags leave it every single day.
The factory uses around 800 tonnes of potatoes daily, all from British farms. Walkers is proud that it uses 100% British potatoes for its crisps. To keep the crisps fresh, the company started using foil bags in 1993. Since 1996, the bags have been filled with nitrogen gas, not just air.
This helps protect the crisps from being crushed and keeps them crunchy.
Innovation and Flavour Campaigns
Since then, Walkers has largely focused on limited-edition flavour campaigns, with very few making the leap to the permanent range. The brand regularly engages with consumers through campaigns that introduce exciting new flavours while maintaining its core range of beloved classics. Whether you prefer the timeless appeal of Cheese and Onion or the adventurous taste of limited-edition varieties, Walkers continues to deliver the quality and taste that has made it the nation’s favourite crisp brand.
